LAb[au] Editions presents art in the form of publications. Many recent projects have generated libraries, archives, and cabinets whose conceptual frameworks rely on reproduction, iteration, seriality, and multiplication.

Many of these works emerge from extensive processes of research and development. These processes often generate extensive series of results that require reproducible material forms—digital prints, photocopies, colour samples, index cards, folders, or other formats. In these formats, the underlying concepts find precise material expression. For some, the edition constitutes the very form through which the work exists.

 

LAb[au] Editions creates a dedicated field in which these works can be produced under viable conditions and circulated directly at accessible prices.

Through an autonomous structure of publication and distribution, LAb[au] Editions preserves the integrity of each work while remaining complementary to our collaborations with galleries.

 

The value of these artist books, monographs, multiples, and limited or open editions lies in their distinct material and conceptual qualities, in the knowledge and experience they make accessible, and in the engagement with our work and research that they enable.

    Each series follows the same protocol yet generates a unique result. It forms one chapter of Entropy lib*, whose different series together constitute a virtual library of difference within repetition and singularity within automation.

  • Description

    Entropy, Milta DC 1205

    Entropy begins with a blank white sheet reproduced on a photocopier. Each resulting copy is copied again, and the process continues until the page becomes fully black. The number of iterations varies according to the machine and its settings.

     

    Rather than producing identical copies, the machine gradually inscribes its own condition onto the page. Dust, mechanical irregularities, and losses of information accumulate with every generation. Emptiness condenses into density; white becomes black, and zero becomes one. What is conventionally understood as error becomes both the visual material and the record of the process.

     

    Each block documents the complete sequence generated by a particular photocopier. For this block, an old Entropy, Milta DC 1205 copier was used, and the process required 12 pages.

     

    The copies appear unstable from the very first —a pale grey, snow-like field in which signal and noise are almost indistinguishable from the outset, making the sequence resemble a day in winter, passing from pale snowfall through dense grey into darkness.
