Through the permutation of the five research fields:

colour, time, signal, language and possibility

an interconnected field of conceptual relations emerges:

COLOUR | TIME , TIME | SIGNAL
POSSIBLE | LANGUAGE , LANGUAGE | TIME

WORTMISCHUNGEN, THE ARCHIVE

LAb[au]’s Wortmischungen colour archive, with linguistic colour combinations presented as indexed cards in grey filing cabinets.

Wortmischungen is an evolving colour archive generated through linguistic permutations. The letters of two colour names are recombined to form a third word: uran and beige, for example, become aubergine. While the operation follows linguistic logic, its results do not obey the rules of colour mixing, opening a semantic field of associations, ambiguities and poetic shifts.

At the archive’s core, a taxonomy classifies colour names according to their etymological, cultural and historical origins. The anagrams are documented on index cards that function as conceptual-art protocols. The archive thereby turns the language and history embedded in colour names into both the subject matter of art and the starting point for possible artworks.
